Sustainability Reporting in the Public Sector - Athens
In the winter semester 2024/25, the COIL4all project offered students from HWR and AUEB Athens the opportunity to work in mixed teams to create a sample report for the city of Athens on selected SDGs.

A central theme of the project was the importance and challenges of intercultural collaboration. Students learned to navigate different working styles and academic expectations.
"We developed strategies to avoid misunderstandings and found creative ways to visually and linguistically communicate our ideas." (HWR student)
Intercultural Collaboration
In addition to language barriers and different academic requirements, the limited availability of data also proved to be a challenge for Athens. However, through teamwork, creative solutions and the use of AI-supported tools, the students were able to overcome these problems.
Practical Application of Theory:
Another added value of the project was the link between theory and practice. The students were able to apply and further develop their knowledge of sustainable urban development. The project was a valuable addition to the degree programme, as it deepened theoretical concepts and demonstrated their practical application. The theoretical content on sustainable urban development that the students learnt in lectures could be applied and further developed in practice.
Personal development and teamwork
In addition to the professional aspects, the students also benefited on a personal level. Working together in an international context promoted their teamwork and communication skills as well as their personal responsibility.
"The application of project management methods in an international context was particularly helpful. Working in intercultural teams strengthened our teamwork skills and broadened our understanding of different approaches." (HWR student)
The presence phase in Athens played a special role here. It gave the participants the opportunity to get to know the partner university as well as various institutions and cultural highlights.
Conclusion and recommendation for future students
The participants found the COIL4all project extremely enriching and would recommend it to others without reservation. In addition to gaining professional and methodological knowledge, they were able to gain valuable intercultural experience and broaden their horizons.
‘It is a great privilege to be able to gain such experience and make at least a small contribution to solving international challenges.’ (HWR student)
For students interested in international cooperation, sustainable urban development and practical project work, the COIL4all format offers a great opportunity for professional and personal development. The combination of online phases, attendance times and intercultural exchange makes this programme a valuable experience for everyone involved.
