National Funding Programmes
Profile
The DFG's primary tasks include the competitive selection of the best research initiatives from researchers at universities and research institutes, as well as their funding. Projects are proposed by researchers or by universities. The topics for study may focus on one discipline or be interdisciplinary in nature.

Funding line: Forschung an Fachhochschulen mit Unternehmen (FHprofUnt): research at universities of applied sciences with businesses
Profile
The aim of the funding line is the application-oriented transfer of knowledge and technology through research cooperation between universities of applied sciences and partners from industry (especially SMEs). For this the involved participation of companies in the planning and implementation of research projects is absolutely essential. Consequently, it is possible to engineer better research-related qualification opportunities for students and for research personnel.

In September 2009, HWR Berlin founded the Institute for Applied Research Berlin (IFAF), together with three other public universities of applied sciences in Berlin. Its aim was to gather, mobilise, and make the transfer of the results of research in universities of applied sciences more accessible and more visible.

This non-profit foundation has been supporting research in all disciplines since 1962. As funding initiatives change, the foundation aims to stimulate science. The Volkswagen Foundation pays particular attention to young researchers and academics and to the cooperation of researchers beyond scientific, cultural and national borders. Two other major concerns are the improvement of training and of research structures in Germany.

The purpose of the pillar “Excellent Science” is to support pioneering research (in particular the ERC programme). The Marie-Sklodowska Curie Programme is of particular interest to HWR Berlin as it promotes researcher mobility.

Horizon 2020 Industrial Leadership
Profile
The purpose of the pillar “Industrial Leadership” is to strengthen the competitiveness of the European economy. Its aim is also to launch innovative products in the market. Funded research is strongly application-oriented and therefore of great interest to universities of applied sciences. However, companies should take the lead in submitting applications. Topics for research projects are specified by the EU in the call for tender.

Horizon 2020 Societal Challenges
Profile
The third pillar "Societal Challenges" is classic piece of European collaborative research. Partners from different European counties (and associated countries) work together in project consortia. In addition to universities and research institutions, companies are also integrated into the consortia. Politically relevant topics for research projects are specified by the EU in the call for tender. Social consequences and gender issues are regarded as intersectional issues that should generally be incorporated.

The FES supports German and non-German students with scholarships during the course of their studies.
- Gerda Henkel Foundation
Generally speaking, the foundation supports research projects that focus within the discipline of history, but it is also active in the field of conflict research.
- German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development (GIF)
The GiF supports German-Israeli research projects, both in foundational and applied research.
- Joint Science Conference (GWK)
The GWK is a joint federal and state body devoted to research funding and support services.
- The Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres
The Helmholtz Association is active in its support of: energy, earth and environment, health, key technologies, structure of matter, and aviation, space and transport.
- Robert Bosch Stiftung
The Robert Bosch Stiftung is a foundation primarily concerned with international understanding, education, and health.

The Technologie-Stiftung Brandenburg is a foundation that supports research and development in the field of innovative technologies.
