Flexible part-time study
Degree programmes at the HWR Berlin are generally taught as full-time courses. In certain cases however, students can submit an application to study in part-time:
- Professional employment
- Legal responsibility for the care of a child under the age of 12
- Responsibility for caring for a close dependant as defined by the Pflegezeitgesetz
- A disability that necessitates part-time study
- Pregnancy
- Election to serve a period in a university office, the student representative body or the Studierendenwerk Berlin
- Other serious grounds
You can apply for authorization to study part-time at the responsible Office for Application, Admissions and Enrolment. Please enclose suitable proof of eligibility.
Application deadlines:
- 10 March for the following summer semester
- 10 September for the following winter semester
- Application form
Applications for part-time study from students on a cooperative studies or integrated degree programme require the consent of their training company or institution.
In principle, the degree programme can be completed on a part-time basis for as long as the reason stated in the application pertains. Important: the period must comprise an even number of consecutive semesters of study. You are obliged to inform the HWR Berlin if your reason for part-time study no longer exists.
If you would like to resume your studies full-time, please submit an application to return to full-time study.
Your student status does not change during part-time study and you remain a member of the HWR Berlin. This means that you must pay the fees and contributions in full on time.
Please note that switching to part-time study may affect any benefits or grants that you receive from other institutions or authorities. This can include, for example: BAföG, child benefit, health insurance, housing eligibility. You should therefore seek advice from the relevant authorities beforehand.
Department of Cooperative Studies
We recommend that you contact your course of studies for advice before submitting your application. As your cooperative studies degree programme involves a contractual training relationship, you must agree your part-time timetable with your partner company. Your course of studies will be happy to support you.
The application for part-time study must be submitted in writing to your course office.
