Saving energy at the HWR Berlin
The HWR Berlin implements a range of measures to save energy in all areas of operation.
How the HWR Berlin saves energy
Saving energy is important both in terms of protecting our climate and reducing energy costs. The HWR Berlin has introduced a mix of short to medium-term measures since 2022:
- The implementation of control strategies to make efficient use of heating, air conditioning and ventilation technology, reduce room temperatures and flatten heating curves
- The replacement of conventional light bulbs with LED lighting
- Switching off decentralized water heating systems
- The establishment of short to medium-term measures to improve the energy efficiency and insulation of buildings
- Measures to raise awareness amongst university members of the importance of energy efficiency and the provision of training in energy-saving behaviour
Reduced opening hours
The HWR Berlin has conducted studies to determine how energy can be saved whenever its facilities are subject to reduced occupation and usage, e.g. times at which there is little teaching or when people are on holiday. This has resulted in reduced opening hours in some buildings during the winter months and closures between Christmas and New Year.
Information on the opening hours of the HWR Berlin facilities is available here.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Please close all windows and raise or retract the blinds at the end of the day.
- Switch off the lights and all electrical appliances. Do not leave your appliances on standby.
- If you are not using your office for a longer period, please turn the thermostat to frost protection mode wherever possible.
- Open the windows fully for three to ten minutes. Do not tilt the windows.
- Rooms should be subject to cross-ventilation wherever possible. Make sure that the doors and windows do not slam shut when ventilating.
- You do not need to switch off the heating whilst the windows are open.
Please ventilate workspaces at regular intervals. The HWR Berlin recommends the following approach:
- Open the window of your office wide (do not tilt the window) for three to ten minutes every 60 minutes.
- Ventilate meeting and seminar rooms by opening the windows wide (do not tilt the window) for three to ten minutes every 20 minutes.
The length of time that a room should be ventilated depends on the wind conditions and the differences in temperature between indoors and outdoors. We recommend:
- Summer: up to ten minutes
- Spring or autumn: five minutes
- Winter: three minutes
