Welcome Day Summer Semester 2025
On March 3rd & 4th 2025, the HWR Berlin welcomed 158 new exchange students from around the globe. A further 80 exchange students are already completing their second semester in Berlin.

With 178 partner institutions, the HWR Berlin highlights the importance of international connections and diversity. Making all students feel welcome and at home is a top priority.
Most students arrived on campus for the Welcome Day on the March 4th where they were welcomed by HWR Berlin’s Vice President Prof. Dr. Sabine Baumann, the International Office director Ingrid Sperber and the Incoming Office Team.
The following days, students participated in various events like the Safe City Course, an informational session with valuable tips on staying safe in Berlin by HWR Berlin’s Police and Security Management professor Christian Matzdorf, and the Red Tape Day, which provided guidance on bureaucratic matters, health insurance and administrative procedures.
Intensive German course
The next few weeks in March, exchanges students will partake in an intensive German course. This two and a half week long course helps students get a basic knowledge of the language and host culture or improve their pre-existing German language skills.
As always, the popular campus tours helped students familiarize themselves with the university’s facilities and gain a first impression of their new academic environment.
Discover Berlin
Each semester the International Office organises activities so that the exchange students can learn about Berlin and its history while getting to know each other. Exchange students from both the Lichtenberg and the Schöneberg campus get together to participate in these activities. Amongst others, students can participate in visits to the Berlin Wall Memorial, the Berlin Global exhibition in the Humboldt Forum and the Sachsenhausen Memorial.
Overall the welcome period, courses and the activities in March offer the exchange students an excellent opportunity to get in the mood for their semester at the HWR Berlin, get to know the city and make their first contacts.
While some students might start out to find their new host culture to be very different from their home culture and others will notice smaller differences, not only the welcome period, but the entire exchange will enhance the students’ awareness of cultural similarities, differences and intercultural understanding.
