At a time of profound upheaval due to digitalization and major challenges due to climate change and demographic change, the demand for innovative solutions in corporate responsibility is greater than ever. Led by Prof. Matthias Tomenendal and his BTH colleague Prof. Matthias Schmidt, this two-week intensive programme engaged participants in developing practical consulting strategies for real-world companies. A highlight was the collaboration with Universal Music Germany, which provided invaluable insights into their internal CSR strategies.

Student Lamar S. from Manchester expressed, “It was a fantastic experience to gain hands-on exposure to consulting practices and present our ideas directly to industry leaders, sharpening my skills in strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and professional communication.”

The second winter course “Strategy and Brand Management in the Brewing Industry” took place at the same time. Participants were given comprehensive insights into current trends and challenges in the industry, particularly in one of the world's most important beer markets. The group was hosted by the Lemke Brewery, the oldest craft beer brewery in Berlin. Professors Carsten Baumgarth, Christoph Dörrenbächer und guest lecturer Jens Gammelgaard from Copenhagen Business School guided students through this unique learning experience.

Beyond academics, students enjoyed a rich cultural programme that showcased Berlin's varied and diverse cultural history. Excursion destinations included the Palace of Tears, the Neues Museum, Charlottenburg Palace and the Topography of Terror. A total of 52 participants from Albania, Australia, China, Georgia, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Singapore, South Korea, the UK and the USA took part in this year's Winter School, with many hailing from the HWR Berlin’s partner universities.

The HWR Berlin winter and summer schools provide additional exchange opportunities for students from international partner universities and HWR students alike.  These short-term programmes cater to those who are unable to take part in a regular semester abroad, offering a chance to broaden intercultural skills and step outside one’s comfort zone.

As Chase I. from Kentucky shared: “These challenges have been incredibly enriching, helping me become more confident, culturally aware, and open-minded.”

With such a successful kick-off for the winter session, we’re excited to turn our attention to the upcoming HWR Berlin Summer School, taking place in June and July.
