PROMOS - The DAAD sholarship for Stays Abroad outside the ERASMUS Programme

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) provides funding in order to increase the mobility of students at German Universities (PROMOS).

  • Apply now until Nov. 15th for PROMOS scholarships for a stay abroad during the summer semester of 2025.

The HWR Berlin’s International Office awards scholarships for stays abroad in the non-European ERASMUS area (overseas) to students who do not receive funding from other public sources (with the exception of BAföG). The DAAD - PROMOS programme promotes the international mobility of German students with scholarships. Scholarship holders are selected by the HWR Berlin.

HWR Berlin has decided to provide scholarships for a semester abroad for up to four months (for the average duration of semesters at host universities) as well as travel scholarships for internships outside of Europe. Individual HWR Departments may decide to limit the number of monthly scholarship rates in order to increase the number of students receiving funding. The amount per month / for travel depends on the country of destination and is subject to DAAD regulations.

Application and Selection Process

All full-time degree seeking Bachelor and Masters students of HWR Berlin who have been accepted at a partner university through the HWR’s International Office, are eligible to apply. The programme is open to students from all Departments. HWR students who have been accepted as freemovers at a university abroad are also eligible to apply. Students will need a grade point average of 2.5 or better at the time of application.

Full-time degree seeking students from abroad who have moved to Berlin for their studies may not apply for scholarships if they intend to spend a semester in their home country, i.e. the country in which students previously spent the largest part of their life regardless of their nationality.

No scholarships will be given to students staying in countries for which the German Foreign Office has issued an official travel warning.

The selection is based on a ranking list. Points are awarded for the average grade (50%) and for the quality of the answers in the motivational questionnaire (50%). The following aspects will be assessed:

  • Academic motivation/future plans and career aspirations (up to 1 point)
  • Personal motivation/influence of your semester abroad on your personality (up to 1 point)
  • Reasons for specifically applying for a PROMOS scholarship (up to 1 point)
  • Country/culture/language of the host country (up to 1 point)
  • 1 extra point for social commitment (please provide proof)
  • An extra ½ point for “HWR talent” (please add copy of your certificate)

We will only consider complete applications. A selection committee consisting of HWR professors, employees of the International Office and student assistants will decide on the basis of the above mentioned criteria and ranking who to award for a PROMOS scholarship. Individual Departments have their own selection committees.

The application process can take approx. 4-5 weeks. You can usually expect to receive an acceptance or rejection letter by the 3rd week of June or December.

In the case that other applicants who have been accepted withdraw from their scholarship (e.g. due to health reasons, alternative scholarships or due to a travel warnings) or the DAAD’s budget permits further funding, applicants who did not receive an acceptance letter in the first round may be nominated at a later stage (“Nachrückverfahren”). The selection is based on the committee's ranking. Students who are already abroad by that time are not excluded from this procedure.

It is therefore important that you immediately inform the International Office should you have received another scholarship from a different organisation.
