Study options for Ukrainian students

The Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) is planning offers for students who had to flee the war in Ukraine. Among other things, there will be study programmes in English for incoming students in the summer semester of 2022. Several full-time German courses for beginners are also in preparation. Refugee students will be able to apply more easily for international degree programmes. The following offers will be made to refugee students from Ukraine by the HWR Berlin:

 I. Offers for visiting students

In the summer semester of 2022, Ukrainian students will be offered the opportunity to take part in a study programme in English for one semester as visiting students, focusing on the field of Business Administration. The university is currently working out the details. The components of the programme include:

1. A German course targeting refugees.
2. Visiting students can choose up to four courses from the courses offered in English in the Business Administration degree programme at the Department of Business and Economics.
3. If possible, the university offers one or more courses in Ukrainian in the Studium Generale in the field of Business Administration.

Initially, up to 40 places are reserved for visiting students from Ukraine. Participants receive ECTS credits, which they can count towards a later application for a place at university.

Which admission requirements do apply?

• Students from Ukrainian universities can participate in the programme if they have studied at least two semesters in Ukraine in the field of business and economics or legal studies.
• Participants must speak English at the level B2.
• In order to participate in the programme, a residence title for a stay in Germany must be provided. The title resulting from the legal ordinance of the Federal Ministry of the Interior for refugees from Ukraine also suffices for the application.
• If the number of interested students is higher than the number of available places, priority will be given to students of the partner universities of the HWR Berlin.

What are the costs?

Guest students are enrolled at the HWR Berlin. The HWR Berlin is currently examining the possibility of having the fees incurred, the contribution to the AStA, the Studierendenwerk and the semester ticket subsidised by a third party. A waiver by the HWR Berlin is not possible for legal reasons.

II. Language course offers for guest students

The HWR Berlin is planning to offer several full-time German courses for beginners in addition to its existing language courses for refugees. The language courses are aimed at people who have fled the Ukraine and are interested in studying. In the language courses, they can acquire German skills they wish to use in the future, either in a study programme in Germany or after the end of the war in Ukraine.

• The courses start on a staggered basis.
• The HWR Berlin will announce the specific dates in due time. They depend, among other things, on the funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Who can join the German courses?

The programme is aimed at people who would like to study. Further admission requirements depend on the DAAD's funding conditions, especially with regard to the nationality of the participants.

III. Easier admission for students from Ukraine

Master's degree programmes in English:

For international Master's degree programmes, the following facilitations are planned with regard to the application:

• The required language skills can be proven until the start of the degree programme, and do not have to be submitted at the time of application.
• Simple copies are sufficient for the proof of the access and admission requirements.
• This applies to all applications from persons with a first professional qualification taken in Ukraine or for persons who had a residence in Ukraine in 2021. A self-declaration is sufficient to prove this criterion.

Bachelor's degree programmes in English:

The HWR Berlin plans to apply these admission facilitations also to application procedures for Bachelor's degree programmes taught in English for the winter semester 2022/23.

• All the procedural facilitations agreed by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK) for the first refugee crisis apply to the applications of Ukrainian refugees.
• Applications must be submitted via the central application portal Uni-Assist.
• The HWR Berlin is currently examining whether third parties will subsidise the fees incurred in the process.
